Thurgood Marshall is Sworn-In as Solicitor General

This photograph is of federal judge Thurgood Marshall being sworn-in as the first African-American Solicitor General by Supreme Court Justice Hugo L. Black. The event took place in the Cabinet Room of the White House on August 24, 1965. Marshall would go on to become a Supreme Court Justice in 1967. Photographed alongside Marshall and Black are President Lyndon B. Johnson, Attorney General Nicholas deB. Katzenbach, Marshall's family: wife Cecilia Marshall and sons Thurgood Marshall, Jr. and John W. Marshall.
